Rams in Kenya is a humanitarian trip that has been running since 2012. Over this time, the trips have allowed over 650 volunteers to make the trip to Kenya. The trip sends volunteers with a range of skills out to a variety of schools in the slums of Nakuru, Kenya.
The goals of these trips are to work with the impoverished local schools to improve sanitation, build new classrooms and facilities, increase safety measures and overall improve the lives of the children and teachers. During these two weeks, along with these main large tasks, the volunteers look to support and enrich the teaching, run and help with physical activity classes and help with cooking and providing hot meals within the schools.
The teams of volunteers get to spend valuable time with the school pupils, dancing, singing and playing games. They get to witness firsthand how small actions can have a lasting effect and change in the children’s lives. Many volunteers who partake in these trips over multiple years are remembered by the children each time they go back, even with years in between trips. This shows the sheer impact these volunteers are making on the children.
Madame Valentine, Founder and Director at West End School (a partnership school of the programme), said: “I think I should write a book about Derby, they have just created a conducive learning area for the kids, and for that, the children have really improved academically, now they feel that they belong to the community. Each time they come to West End, magic just happens.”
Bowers sponsored Evie for her trip out to Kenya, where she spent her two weeks at St Trizah school in Nakuru.
The work for the two weeks was intensive and hard labour. The efforts to try and fit as much help and work into two weeks are always a challenge for the groups.
Evie’s two weeks started with the building of a toilet block for the school. What sounds like such a basic facility to most is a luxury to these schools.
Being able to improve the everyday lives of the children and teachers at these schools, even once the trip is over, is everything the Rams in Kenya trips are about.
Their work was followed by painting the school with learning aids and pictures to enrich the children’s learning, as well as planting trees around the grounds. The little additions like this are what help the children have a holistic learning experience and help give the kids a bit more of an experience similar to what we get to experience in the UK, and that is being noticed by the teachers.
With sponsorship and donation money from Bowers Electricals and other supporting individuals/ businesses, the Derby County Community Trust and volunteers were able to bring plenty of clothes, toys and gifts to donate to the children and their families. Allowing the children to get to pick their own outfit that they wanted to keep and take home in a bag was a nice touch for the children, who often haven’t had this luxury in their lives.
Bowers Electricals were happy to support Derby County Community Trust, the Rams in Kenya trip, and Evie.
Bowers Group CEO Michael said this on being able to support the local community – “When we heard about what the Derby County Community Trust were doing and how much of a difference it made over there, we were very impressed. Hearing Evie’s story and why she wanted to go was truly aspirational. Being able to support a local to go and make a difference was definitely something we thought was worth pursuing, and it looks like it was well worth it!”
We are so happy to give back to the community in a way that supports a very good cause. We hope the Rams in Kenya trip can continue for years to come and continue to enrich the learning experiences of these children.
As Bowers Electricals continues to grow, so too does our commitment to giving back. Supporting projects like Rams in Kenya is just one way we contribute to making a positive difference, both internationally and closer to home. We are equally passionate about supporting local charities and initiatives within our own community, helping to create lasting impact for those around us.
