World’s First Green Hydrogen Production and Distribution Network

Fife Green Hydrogen Production Project

Bowers Electricals recently supplied two transformers for a world-first green hydrogen gas network project in Fife, Scotland. The H100 Fife project by SGN aims to bring a carbon-free solution to home heating.

world's first green hydrogen project

This project, when up and running, will supply green hydrogen for up to 300 homes. This project will be the first-of-a-kind 100% hydrogen-to-homes heating network.

Altrad Babcock (the project contractor responsible for constructing the H100 Fife production site) entrusted Bowers Electricals with the supply of the distribution transformers for this project to ensure quality and reliability. Altrad Babcock is a vastly experienced specialist, full-cycle engineering solutions provider with an extensive background in power and pioneering energy solutions.

The hydrogen in this project will be used as a way of replacing natural gas. Hydrogen gas being used for this purpose produces no carbon emissions at the point of use. This means it could play a key role in tackling the climate emergency.

The project aims to heat around 300 local homes using green hydrogen gas that has been produced by an electrolysis plant. This plant is powered by offshore wind power.

The eligible houses that qualify for inclusion in the project are situated in the area as shown by the map diagram. These households have all opted in to be included in the world-first project.

Heating accounts for approximately 37% of all UK carbon emissions. This acts as a huge part of the problem of aiming for net zero.

Bowers Electricals’ role in this project is crucial. The transformers supplied to this project by Bowers Electricals will provide a three-phase step-down of power for use in the buildings. This is done with two 1MVA 11000/420V Dyn11 KNAN transformers supplied by Bowers Electricals (pictured).

Managing Director Kevin Chapman had this to say on Bowers Electricals’ inclusion in the project:

“We are excited that our equipment is being utilised in this first-of-a-kind demonstration project that is leading the way in decarbonising home heating.”
“Our involvement aligns with our commitment to sustainability and innovation that may lead to cleaner energy solutions and help shape a greener, more sustainable future.”
