Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) 'Are you sitting on a time bomb?'
New regulations concerning the use and holding of PCB
have been in force for a couple of years now and require
that you as the holder of equipment need to arrange an
audit to find out if you have substances or equipment
that contains more than 50 ppm of PCB. This would include
any PCB filled transformers (the UK trade name for the
PCB is probably Pyroclor), capacitors,
reactors and previously retrofilled
ex PCB filled transformers and surprisingly, many ordinary
oil filled transformers.
- A register must be kept showing the amount of PCB
and its location.
- All PCB containing items must be labelled and similar
labels affixed to the doors of the premises containing
the PCB items.
- A plan must be drawn up showing how and when you
propose to legally dispose of all PCBs and PCB containing
items
- You must register the amount of PCB you have with
the Department of the Environment
Failure to register your PCB holdings
will mean that it will be illegal to use the equipment
by law!!!! Along with a large FINE
Eurotech Waste Management Ltd.
(a Bowers Electricals Ltd.
associate company) specialise in dealing with PCB associated
problems including advice, identification of PCBs, analysis,
arranging the legal documentation and the removal and
legal disposal of PCBs.
We have a more detailed but easy to understand pack
of information showing the current legal requirements
relating to the regulations that tells you all you
need to do to comply. The information pack also describes
PCBs and tells you about the affect PCB has on the
environment and on human beings. It includes First
Aid advice and a suggested policy for dealing with
PCBs.
Even if you do not think that your Company owns any
PCBs, it is probable that the Environment Agencies
will require proof that you have carried out an audit
and could demand that samples are taken and analysed
to prove that you are PCB free.
We would be happy to send you this more detailed information
or visit you, free of charge, to help you identify
PCB containing items and guide you through the preparation
of plans for disposal and registration with suitable
authorities. We can even conduct a short seminar on
PCBs and the regulations using either overhead slides
or (for small numbers of people) on a computer.
Our only motive for supplying this free information and
help is the hope that you would allow us to quote, competitively,
for any disposal/replacement work that will be necessary
if your Company owns PCBs. Please do not hesitate to contact
us.
